[attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]In Highland Tails, we wanted something that would allow us to stand out among other warrior cats roleplays. War, although always interesting and immersive, isn't always super fun. So we decided to add in a system that is key to both clans' still forming culture. But allow me to tell you more about them!
The Council
These cats are elected by their clanmates to aid the leader, deputy, and medicine cat in making decisions for the clan. They also ensure that no leader becomes too destructive to the clan. In trials, these cats act as judge with the leader and are not permitted to be a jury member or aid in either side. The positions are usually held by senior warriors, but the youngest permitted to be elected is 35 moons. Elections are held seasonally, and characters may only have 2 terms and then must wait out a term afterward.
Summary of The Council
• Elected by the clan
• Character must be atleast 35 Moons
• Give leader advice
• Have knowledge of wars, trials, etc before the clan
• Seasonal rank
• 2 terms max
Trial Roles
But you may ask, well what happens in a trial? The leader (primarily), with the aid of their deputy and council act as the judge. They listen to the trial and hear the verdict and it is up to them to create a punishment for the cat, if guilty. If a leader is accused and put on trial, the conclave work as the judge together and have the final say in punishment (if guilty).
The cat accused is the defendant of the trial, and is allowed to pick one cat to be their "lawyer" and make their case for them in front of the entire clan or clans. They must speak or show of evidence that the cat did not do the crime, whether it is calling upon witnesses, showing evidence, etc.
On behalf of the clan, the accuser picks the prosecutor who makes their case that the defendant is guilty of their crimes/actions. They must speak or show evidence of the actions. They may choose to be prosecutor themselves or select another cat to do so.
The jury is a random selection of cats within the clan that are warriors. It is their job to listen to the evidence and then convene afterward and decide if the cat is innocent or guilty.
Summary of Roles
• Judge - Leader (primarily), deputy, conclave
• Defendant - Cat accused
• Prosecutor - Cat accusing
• Advocate - Cats who make cases for either side (lawyers)
• Jury - Randomly selected members who give the guilty/innocent verdict
Trials
Trials were introduced at the founding of the clans, so that all cats would receive fair judgement on their actions. Trials are held by the leader and council when a member of the clan, regardless of rank, has been accused of wrongdoing. The claims, however, must be serious and have grounding to be taken to trial.
Reasons For Trials
• Breaking the code
• Giving away clan secrets
• Death / Murder
Grand Trials
Grand trials involve both clans, and are often called upon to avoid an all out war. This is an easy way to solve minor problems between both clans, such as forbidden romances, deaths, and other non-territorial disputes. These trials are held at the gathering place when called upon.
In a grand trial, both clans' leaders and councils come together to be a large conclave of judges. The jury are randomly selected from both clans, but the audience members are permitted to watch the trial unfold. Grand trials, because both clans are involved, are typically MUCH higher stake than normal trials. If found guilty, the usual punishment is exile.
Summary of Grand Trials
• Involves both clans
• Takes place at the gathering place
• Extremely high stakes
• Jury is pulled from both clans (randomly)
• Audience members welcomed
